Seed Collection guides
SCG contributors: Dave Crawford (naturalist retired from Wild River SP in MN) had the idea and created what I call seed collection guides (SCG). Simon Helgeson and John van der Linden (interns for TNC 2009) took many photos and created the first versions for dozens of species. Terry Hayward (vol for TNC) added text , and pulled together guide sheets for many more species.
Each seed collection guide sheet should tell the user:

- what the plant looks like prior to seed collection time; so they can map locations
- what type of habitat and micro-environment the species prefers; so they can narrow down where to look in the field
- what the plant looks like when in seed:
- where applicable, from several yards away
- from a few feet away
- in detail whatever is most visible and/or characteristic (plant structure, foliage, seed head structure, texture, smell, etc.)
- what the seed looks like and how to distinguish it from the non-seed parts of the seed head
- when the seed is ready to pick
- how to pick the seed effectively
Pick the seed collection guides you are interested in. You may want to print them, so you can take them into the field with you.
